DESCRIPTION:
Imagine a drawknife and a spokeshave merged. That’s the monster shave. So named after the beloved spokeshave of chairmaker Peter Galbert. His “monster shave” was the inspiration for this model.
This shave took me about 2 years of development as most of my tools usually do. After a 5 year production hiatus it’s back and better than ever.
It has some unique features such as a bevel down blade which means the cutting edge in relation to the sole will stay constant throughout the life of the tool. The bevel down blade will allow you to carve outside and inside curves (down to 8” radius) as well as flat surfaces. The large mass of the body and thick blade make heavy stock removal possible. Much like a drawknife but with the control of a spokeshave.
Just like my other spokeshaves, the depth of cut is controlled by the orientation of the tool to the surface of the wood. This allows you to take light or heavy cuts all with the same blade setting. The shave comes set up and sharp ready to use. This wooden shave also has a brass insert in the sole to limit wear and extend its usable life.

Options with the designation “BLEM” have very minor flaws/blemishes. I’m very picky so likely you may not even see what makes the item a “blem”. They are 100% fully functional.

A traditional spokeshave, but uniquely my own. It looks and performs just like a truly traditional spokeshave would. The depth of cut is controlled intuitively on the fly entirely by rocking the tool either forward or backwards. This shave is a shaping machine that you'll come to love picking up.
This wooden bodied shave has a sole that is inserted with a brass wear strip. This dramatically increases the life of the tool yet leaves it feeling light and responsive which gives great cutting feedback in use.
These are native American woods (typically cut and dried by me) like pear, apple, and persimmon. I also use exotics such as rosewoods, ebonys and boxwood when available.

NEW BLACK METAL OPTION (Info at bottom)
Meet your future best shop mate - inspired by traditional cigar shaves but with a modern take. Its primary function is to carve into tight concave areas with fluidity and ultimate control. It’s form is a combination of a traditional round bottom spokeshave and cigar shave but it’s functional design departs from there. I’ve developed a bevel down blade which allows carving into tight curves down to ~1-1/2” radius. The feel is a natural carving action, much like using a carving gouge, with just the right bevel shape to aid in a smooth action.
This shave shares the same depth of cut control as my standard spokeshaves. The depth of cut is controlled intuitively on the fly entirely by rocking the tool either forward or backwards. The tool comes set to my preference but you can fine tune the blade setting to fit your desired range of action from light to aggressive. No doubt you’ll find a setting that suits your style of work in short order.
As with all my shaves I utilize a very hardwearing "boxing" strip in the sole. Unlike a traditional wooden spokeshave the sole on this shave will maintain its shape under heavy use.

New metal shave info: It’s just like my wooden shave but (obviously) all metal. It has an extremely hard wearing type III anodized finish over aluminum. It took me 4 years of prototyping to dial in exactly what I do by hand but in metal. It required dabbling with metal types and finishes before I found the right combination that still gave the feedback of a wooden shave. It’s lovely and I think you will be thrilled.
